A weekly musical meet¬-up soon turned into a smooth and prolific creative process by nascent Berlin-based collective, Leute With Intent. The result is ‘Vierzehn’, an 11-track album incorporating styles that take influence from diverse world cultures and languages. Using both live instrumentation and vocals alongside electronic production and synths, tracks vary from upbeat, dreamy dub¬electronica to jackin’ South American tinged rhythms, tripped out Middle Eastern beats and downtempo, eerie trip¬hop. ‘Vierzehn’ features live guitar, dulcimer, piano and synths along with a pioneering mix of found sounds, homemade percussion and improvised elements.
Leute With Intent is made up of acclaimed production duo Turtlez, talented poly-instrumentalist Shanghai Burton and distinctive multi¬lingual vocalist Jade Vine. Invigorated by personal milestones—Jade and Shanghai took their collaboration a step further by getting married, and one half of Turtlez became a father for the first time—Leute With Intent produced ‘Vierzehn’ (German for Fourteen) throughout 2014.
During relaxed late night sessions, the collective maintained an open-door policy, working with whichever musicians turned up each week. In addition to the four core members, Leute With Intent collaborated with artists such as Skwirl (soon to be releasing a solo project on the label) and Ralph Alfa (regular resident at Skrufix club nights).
A journey of emotion and soundscapes, ‘Vierzehn’ starts with ‘Goerli’, a tune that captures the dreamy haze of a Berlin summer afternoon, before leading into the freaked-out playfulness of ‘Bonus Technique’, getting raw as the deep bass and Turkish vocal kick in on ‘Eczane’. After an interlude to break things up, ‘Like a Peanut’ messes with your mind and then spins you into an epic space rave with Scandinavian Nu Disco monster ‘Kickboxing’ (think Lindstrom with a bit more punch and a dose of rave).
Bringing things back down to earth is ‘Feasible Reasonable,’ chucking in a bit of lively keys, bass and noises again and introducing the sitar-driven, Middle Eastern sounds of ‘Yak Kesta’. Intense from the out¬set, the heartfelt Farsi lyrics move this track, and the album, to another level.
Next up is ‘The AmBASSador,’ a carnivalesque, Rio funk inspired mash¬up which again shows the crew don’t take themselves too seriously. ‘That Tune’ brings the vibe down a notch for a builder of pads, bleeps, blips and pensive layered vocals. The penultimate track, ‘Serious’, lives up to its name, with keys, guitar, dulcimer, drum machine and vocals all recorded live. Then, the tingling loveliness of ‘Somber Wind’ signals this album’s beautiful close.
Leute With Intent are currently working on new material and adapting a live show, but for now check out the debut album from 15th June 2015.
